| 肉体や肉体の欲望を悪と見なす哲学者は古代中世には大勢いた.それは精神に対立するものとみなされ, 「自分が肉体を持っていることを恥じる」哲学者が尊敬を受けることもあった.生きている身体についてさえこのように考えるのであるから, まして遺体については何らの顧慮も払わないのは当然である.彼らにとって遺体は石ころと同じ単なる物体にすぎない.魂のない遺体が単なる物体であることにはアウグスティヌスは同意する.遺体がどのような扱いを受けようとも死者の幸福とは何の関係もないからである.しかしだからといって遺体を粗末に扱っても構わないということには同意しない.それは神が遺体が丁重に扱われることを望んでいるという箇所が聖書にあるからである.この理由をアウグスティヌスは次のように説明する.本来どのように扱われても構わないはずの遺体が丁重に扱われることを神が望んでいるという記載が聖書にあるのは, 読者にそのような身体にさえも神の配慮が及ぶことに示すことによって完全な身体を以って復活することへの希望を持たせ信仰を強めるためなのである. | ||||||||

| Why should we respect corpse? Many ancient philosophers regarded lifeless corpse as mere body like stones. So they had no respect to corpse. Augustine, on the one hand, agrees with them as far as he thinks body without soul is merely body and soul separated from body suffers no effect how much damage we do to body. But on the other hand, he asserts we must pay respect to dead body. The reason Augustine mentions is based on the Bible. In the Bible, there are many descriptions that God desires corpse is treated respectfully but notwithstanding permits it to be treated badly. Augustine says these apparently incompatible descriptions are given in the Bible in order to make solid our faith on Resurrection with perfect body. | ||||||||
