Many ancient philosophers regarded lifeless corpse as mere body like stones. So they had no respect to corpse. Augustine, on the one hand, agrees with them as far as he thinks body without soul is merely body and soul separated from body suffers no effect how much damage we do to body. But on the other hand, he asserts we must pay respect to dead body. The reason Augustine mentions is based on the Bible. In the Bible, there are many descriptions that God desires corpse is treated respectfully but notwithstanding permits it to be treated badly.
