| Tess of the d'Urbervillesのヒロイン・テスのカタストロフィの原因を考察する時, 外的要因と内的要因が挙げられる.前者はsociallaw, moralorder, socialprejudice, circumstanceなど.後者はテス自身の性格的なものsensitivity, purity, tenderness, responsibility, endur-anceなどである.一見矛盾しているが, Hardyは人間の美徳が常に利につながらず, 害になるばかりか時としては自己破壊の要因になりうるプロセスをテスの生き様を通して描写している.中でも興味があるのは恐らくこの作品に初めて導入された'theacheofrnodemism'の表現に見られる'a tragedy of consciousness'のvisionである.テスはsdf-sacrificeかself-reservationか或いはself-denyingかprideかと言った二項対立の中で選択を迫られる時, この決定権を持つのは彼女の意識つまり客観性のない彼女自身だけに通じる主観的であり, 更に事態と人格を葛藤させる罪の意識によるものである.テスのカタストロフィへの旅は「罪の意識」に支配される'self-denying'と'pride'の相克の旅でもあると言える.そして彼女の死によってのみこの実体のない「罪の意識」から解放されるのである. | ||||||||

| Tess, the heroine in Tess of the d'Urbervilles, is thought of the most tragical female of other heroines in Hardy's works. Concerning the cause of Tess's catastrophe, there are two different parts of tragic factors : one is external factors and the other is inner ones. In this paper I would like to focus and analyze Tess's nature, and especially her self-consciousness, because I regard Tess as 'a tragedy of consciousness'. And it is very interesting to find "the ache of modernism" in the expression of Tess's psychological phenomenon in the state of ambivalence. When she is urged to choose one out of two, it is her sense of sin that decides which is. Therefore Tess's tragedy of self-consciousness is doomed to end only by her death. | ||||||||
