| "近年, ペットに死なれた飼い主が, 身近なものを失った場合と変わらない精神的打撃を受けることがしられ, """"ペットロス""""として注目されている.ペットロスは特に孤独な老人の場合に, より深刻な様相を呈するといわれている.現代の産業社会においては, 老人は生産活動から遠のき, 人間関係が希薄になって, いわゆる脱社会化現象が起こりやすく孤独に陥りやすい.ペットとの関わりはこのような老人の孤独に対して大きな支援をもたらす.ペットとしての犬の場合にはその特性から飼い主と関わることを心から喜んで飼い主に従う.それは対等な人間関係とは本質的に異なるが, 関係の真実さと, 老人のペースに見合った関係が得られることから, 生命エネルギーが乏しくなった老人にとっては, 人間関係に代わるものを与える援助の手段として積極的な評価が必要である." | ||||||||||

| "In recent years, it has become known that some of pet owners suffer as if they had lost their close relatives when they lose their pets. The symptoms of pet loss can be serious especially in elderly people. In the modern industrial society, the aged become removed from productive activity which results in a lower social status. Their human relationships become unsatisfactory, and so-called ""disengagement"" occurs. This phenomenon is an inevitable result of the industrial society and a clear cut solution is difficult. Communication with pets gives much needed support to elderly people in such situations. Dogs, for example, are very obedient and trust their owners implicitly. This is fundamentally differet from actual human relationship. However, the pet owners get a true relationship that is in accord with the pace of the elderly person. Pets make good companions that can take the place of relationships with humans." | ||||||||||
