| かつて, ひどい欝病にかかったことのあるBellamyは信仰に救いを見い出し, 僧院に入るべく準備を進める中で, 愛する犬のAnaxを手放し, 安逸な暮しをすっかり捨て去ってしまう.Damien神父の, 普通の暮しの中に留まって人々を助け, 幸せになるようにとの忠告にも耳を貸そうともしない.しかし, Peterとの出会いと神父の信仰の放棄がBellamyを目覚めさせ, 彼は人々の中に留まって, 善と幸せを求めようと決意するに至る.この決意はMoyの生命を救うことで現実のものとなる.Bellamyの目覚めの過程で, マードックは人格神, キリストの神性や, 永遠の生命を否定し, 自己の宗教観を明らかにしている. | ||||||||

| Bellamy, who once suffered from a severe depression, is now trapped in a false religious fantasy and wants to go into a monastery. In his preparation for going into a monastery, he got rid of his beloved dog, Anax, and other comforts in his life. He would not listen to Father Damien's advice which urged him to go back to his friends and get an ordinary job. But an encounter with Peter and Father Damien's confession of the loss of his faith awake Bellamy from a fantasy. He finally resolves to stay with ordinary people and help them. His resolution is materialized in his rescue of Moy from drowning. Murdoch clarifies her view on Christianity in the process of Bellamy' s awakening : her disbelief in any personal God or any supernatural divinity or in the divinity of Christ or in eternal life. | ||||||||
