| 8編の作品から成る短編集「家の中の鳥」はローレンスの唯一の自伝的作品である.この作品に於て, 大恐慌や戦争, さらには人種差別による人々の苦しみが, ローレンス自身であるバネッサという名の少女の目を通して語られる.バネッサは常に物語を書くことに熱中しているが, 周囲の大人達の苦しみ, 悲しみを目撃することによって物事を見る目が深められ, 現実から遊離した自身の作品と決別する.子供時代に恐れ, 嫌っていた母方の祖父のパイオニアとしての辛酸の日々を理解し, 受け入れる過程も併せて語られる. | ||||||||

| In A Bird in the House, which consists of eight short stories originally published separately, Margaret Laurence shows us how the depression, war and racial discrimination affect people's lives.She also shows us how artistic vision is developed.Young Vanessa, who is exposed to people's suffering and pain too early for her age, stops writing about romantic fantasy.Her theme will be the pain and love involved in people's real lives.This work is also a kind of revaluation of her maternal grandfather whom she hated and feared in her childhood. | ||||||||
