| 8編の作品から成る短編集「家の中の鳥」はローレンスの唯一の自伝的作品である.この作品に於て, 大恐慌や戦争, さらには人種差別による人々の苦しみが, ローレンス自身であるバネッサという名の少女の目を通して語られる.バネッサは常に物語を書くことに熱中しているが, 周囲の大人達の苦しみ, 悲しみを目撃することによって物事を見る目が深められ, 現実から遊離した自身の作品と決別する.子供時代に恐れ, 嫌っていた母方の祖父のパイオニアとしての辛酸の日々を理解し, 受け入れる過程も併せて語られる. | ||||||||
