However, the mechanism of elevated serum copper concentrations in CKD is not yet clear. Since most of the copper in serum is derived from copper in ceruloplasmin (CP), elevated serum copper levels may reflect changes in CP. In this study, serum copper and CP levels were evaluated in adenine-induced chronic kidney disease rats. Eight-week-old male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: a 0.25 % adenine supplemented diet group (AD group, 6 rats) and a standard diet group (C group, 6 rats), and each diet was fed for 8 weeks. Compared with group C, the AD group had significantly higher serum creatinine, urea nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations, and significantly lower whole blood hemoglobin. Serum copper and CP were significantly higher in the AD group, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were also significantly higher in the AD group. Copper and CP showed a positive correlation with CRP.
