This study was conducted using the Japanese version of the Erikson Psychosocial Stage Inventory. A cross-sectional survey using a web-based questionnaire was conducted among 4012 students enrolled at University A. Of the 1159 valid responses, 1157 were included in the analysis and divided into three groups: nursing students, students with national examinations, and students without national examinations, for comparison. Quantitative data among the three groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test. In a comparison of scores on the Japanese version of the Erikson Psychosocial Stage Inventory for all grades, nursing students were significantly higher than the other two groups in initiative, identity, and generativity. Third-year nursing students were significantly higher in identity than students without national examinations. The third-year nursing students had completed about 2/3 of their field practice, which is the most important and deepest part of their nursing studies. Through various experiences and interactions with patients in the field practice, they felt their own growth and confidence and it can be inferred that the students felt a sense of identification.
