This study conducted a vignette experiment of counselor’s responses to their clients during LINE counseling. The client’s evaluation of a counseling session (depth and smoothness) and post-session mood (positivity and arousal) were assessed by the Japanese Session Evaluation Questionnaire (J-SEQ). The client’s engagement in counseling was also examined as the willingness to continue with LINE counseling. In the initial LINE counseling session for the client’s interpersonal problems, three vignettes were developed consisting of the counselor’s acceptance/ empathy and questions, acceptance/empathy only, or question only. College students participated in this study. The participants read one of the three vignettes, responded to the J-SEQ, and asked one question about their counseling engagement. Data from 153 participants who could imagine the counseling session were analyzed. Analyses of variance were conducted on J-SEQ subscale scores and engagement in counseling score showed significant effects. Also, multiple comparison analyses revealed that counselors’acceptance/empathy and questions were significantly more effective than counselors’questions only on all the J-SEQ subscales and more effective than acceptance only on the engagement in counseling. These results suggest that a combination of counselor’s acceptance, empathy, and questions are essential in LINE counseling.
