Many students feel stress in that environment. Suicide and school refusal are social issues. Therefore, dealing with stress is urgent. The idea of resilience, or of overcoming difficult events and making use of that experience, has drawn attention in recent psychological studies. However, the relationship between stress and resilience has not been revealed. The object of this study was to clarify the relationship between stress and resilience by way of a longitudinal method. The subjects were 139 high school students in Japan (103 males and 36 females). The subjects answered questionnaires in 10th grade and again in 12th grade that asked about personal characteristics (e.g., gender, age, and school year) and incorporated the Interpersonal Stress Scale and the Resilience Scale. After examination of the construct validity of each scale, the relationship between stress and resilience was considered using a cross-lagged model of structural equation modeling (SEM). The construct validity of each scale was good. The results of analysis with the cross- lagged model showed that stress experienced in 10th grade influenced stress experienced in 12th grade. Similarly, the level of resilience developed in 10th grade influenced a student’s level of resilience in 12th grade. Moreover, the stress experienced in 10th grade influenced a student’s resilience developed by 12th grade (RAMSEA=0.057, CFI=0.897, TLI=0.886). The results of this study suggest that interpersonal stress influences one’s level of resilience. That is, high school students resist stress by developing resilience. It is important to understand the student’s stress and resilience from entry to high school.
