The following hypothesis was established: low self-control and high loneliness would increase Internet addiction tendencies based on the motives of the person using the Internet, which were classified as communication-oriented and content-oriented motives. A questionnaire was administered to university students, and data without missing values were analyzed (N=361). The results of correlation analysis indicated that not only high loneliness and content-oriented motives, but also especially low self-control and communication-oriented motives were strongly correlated with the Internet addiction tendency. Moreover, self-control had negative correlations with loneliness and communication-oriented motives. On the other hand, there were no correlations between low self-control abilities and content-oriented motives, as well as between high loneliness and communication-oriented motives. The effects of interactions between self-control and content-oriented motives and interactions between loneliness and communication-oriented motives on Internet addiction tendencies were examined using hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The results indicated significant interactions between self-control abilities and content-oriented motives. Internet addiction tendencies increased more when content-oriented motives increased in people with low compared to high self-control abilities.
