Students have been passive until now in most lecture-centered learning which is limiting and has ill-effects on the effort to foster the ability to think, make decisions and express one’s own opinion. To improve character and abilities, there is a need to have lesson designs that have the learner act on own initiative by introducing active learning. By introducing universal design to lesson design, the obstacles to learning will be alleviated and we can expect learning to be activated, leading to the participation and increased knowledge of students. We reviewed and organized the literature on lesson improvement and active learning from the viewpoint of universal design.
