We conducted semistructured interviews with five specialists consisting of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. The analysis based on the interviews showed that the relationship of the atypical depression patients with their mothers may be characterized in that their mothers neglected fundamental care and support of them. The defense mechanism observed among the atypical depression patients was similar to that in the borderline personality disorder patients, and the level of defense mechanism used by them may be primitive. The properties of the atypical depression patients’ego function were found to be similar to those of the borderline personality disorder patients’ego function, but the level of the atypical depression patients’ego function was higher than that of the borderline personality disorder patients’ego function.
