It was found that the majority of research focused on the relationships between the mentally handicapped and the　health professionals who support them, including a large amount of research from the viewpoint of the health professionals. Until recent years, most research was quantitative in nature, and focused on the specific roles of each party involved. However, current research tends to focus more on the quality of relationships, positioning mentally handicapped persons at the center of inquiry. More emphasis is also being placed on interactions with the wider community. It is worth noting that studies on the relationship between the mentally handicapped and their community is still severely lacking.
