Rats received intracecal infusion or oral infusion of 15μmol of 13C-acetate. The 13C breath test was performed. An expired air was collected at appropriate intervals and a concentration of 13CO2 in the air was measured with an infrared analyzer. The expired 13CO2 increased rapidly after the intracecal infusion or the oral infusion of the 13C-acetate, and then decreased gradually. Maximum concentration (Cmax) of 13CO2 in the expired air was significantly lower in the intracecal infusion than in the oral infusion. The Cmax increased in a dose dependent manner in both the intracecal infusin and the oral infusin. When rats received intracecal infusion of the 13C-acetate, 13C-propionate or 13C-butyrate, the Cmax was significantly higher in the 13C-propionate than in the others. The Cmax in SCFAs except for propionate tended to decline during the experimental 3 weeks. These results suggest that absorption and post-absorptive metabolism of propionate differ from those of acetate and butyrate in the large intestine.
