In this study two hundred seventy-five workers were assessed using the Tri-axial Coping scale (TAC-24) twice in every hypothetical stressful situation. They described themselves in every hypothetical situation in the first rating, while, in the second, they described themselves assuming that they failed in coping with the situation. A discrepancy in coping style between these ratings defined the pattern of coping flexibility of each participant. The workers also described themselves on other two scales, cognitive appraisal and job satisfaction. Results of analysis 1 showed that job satisfaction was greater for workers who appraised the failure in coping less threatening in the hypothetical interpersonal stressor, and that job satisfaction of workers with alterable coping style was less great in the encounter-avoidance coping dimension, but greater in the behavior-cognition coping dimension. Results of analysis 2 revealed that job satisfaction was greater for workers who did not separate coping for different kinds of stressors in the problem-emotion coping dimension and in the behavior-cognition coping dimensions.
