In this study, effects of thermal and chemical stimulation of the anterior pillar of the fauces on spontaneous swallowing were examined in 15 healthy subjects and 2 dysphagic patients. Laryngeal movements were detected with a force transducer and used as the index of swallowing. Date obtained by mechanical stimulation using a swab moistened with 25℃ saline solution were used as control. Cold and warm stimulation were tested with swabs at 0 °and 42℃, respectively. A swab of 100% lemon juice was used for acid stimulation. The duration of laryngeal movements with each swallow was significantly shortened after acid and cold stimulation of the fauces. Also, the interval between swallows was significantly shortened immediately after acid stimulation. Acid stimulation also induced increased spontaneous swallowing in patients along with a shortened duration of laryngeal movements. However, the differences were not statistically significant.
