The response rate was 37.5% (199 facilities). The following results were obtained. (1) Terminal care was provided at 23 facilities (11.6%) and at the request of elderly residents or their families at 137 facilities (68.8%) but was not provided at 39 facilities (19.6%) (2) The facilities that porvided terminal care often had a long history after establishment. (3) There was no association between the practice of terminal care and the establishment of an adjoining hospital. (4) In facilities that meet the wish of elderly residents and their families in terms of the place of death, the death rate at the facility was high, and terminal care was provided. (5) In facilitis that actively provided terminal care, there were a few nurses but many practical nurses. (6) Care for health management and disease prevention, which requires medical knowledge and skills, was provided by structural teamwork with dormmothers. These results suggested that terminal care at special nursing homes for the elderly has been advancing due to aging of elderly residents and increased needs.
